Five SecondsCara membuka rapat direksi dan interview senior supaya ruangan langsung mendengarkanHow to open a board meeting or senior interview so the room listens from the first sentence

Ruang rapat direksi, 08.02. Sebelum mulai, izinkan saya memperkenalkan diri…”

STOPPelatih menghentikan Anda. “Anda baru saja kehilangan ruangan.”

Kenapa? Kalimat itu sopan. Jawabannya bukan soal sopan santun, melainkan cara otak manusia memproses informasi.

Boardroom, 8:02 am. Ten directors are seated. You stand and say, “Good morning, everyone, thank you for making the time. Before we start, let me introduce myself…”

STOPThe coach cuts you off. “You just lost the room.”

Why? The sentence was polite. The answer is not about manners. It is about how the human brain processes information.

Kenapa “jawaban dulu” bekerjaWhy “answer first” works

The “no small talk” rule is not a style preference. It follows from eight cognitive mechanisms tested in the lab. Once you understand the mechanisms, you don’t need to memorise rules: you can work out how to open any meeting yourself.

Model gabungan: satu rantai sebab-akibatThe combined model: one causal chain

Batas klaim ilmiah. Limits of the evidence. No controlled experiment has directly compared “open with a greeting” versus “open with the answer” in a boardroom. This recommendation is an inference from the mechanisms above, plus practitioner conventions such as the Pyramid Principle (Minto) and the US military’s BLUF, bottom line up front. A two-second greeting is fine, especially in relationship-first cultures. The damage comes when the most valuable slot is spent on content with no information.

Directors walk in with one question: “What do you want me to decide?” Your first sentence must answer it. Courtesy stays, carried by your tone and eye contact, not by an opening paragraph.

Pyramid Principle dan SCQAThe Pyramid Principle and SCQA

A strong opening needs structure behind it. Barbara Minto, a management consultant, framed it as a pyramid: one governing thought at the top, three arguments beneath it, data at the base. The audience can stop listening at any level and still leave with the main message.

Many professionals default to bureaucratic language in meetings: “it can be conveyed that there is potential to undertake optimisation.” Oppenheimer’s research (2006) found needlessly complex vocabulary makes the writer seem less intelligent. Lower-pitched voices are rated as stronger leaders, for men and women (Klofstad et al., 2012). In practice: don’t rise in pitch at the end of a statement.
Jeda setelah angkaPause after the numberJeda memberi memori kerja waktu untuk menyimpan angka. Ini konsekuensi langsung dari teori beban kognitif.A pause gives working memory time to store the number. It follows directly from cognitive load theory.

Jangan diandalkanDon’t rely on it

Its hormonal and behavioural effects did not replicate in a larger sample (Ranehill et al., 2015). Upright posture still helps how you come across, but it is not a hormone-changing “hack”.

5Cerita dan dataStory and data Intermediate

Satu cerita, satu angkaOne story, one number

Green and Brock (2000) found that people “transported” into a story are more likely to shift their beliefs toward it. In a meeting, the story makes directors feel the risk; the number lets them weigh it. You need both, in small doses.

Slide eksekutif: judul adalah kesimpulanExecutive slides: the title is the conclusion

Kalau direktur hanya membaca judul slide Anda, apakah mereka tetap paham pesannya? Itu ujiannya. Judul topik (“Biaya Logistik Q3”) memaksa audiens menarik kesimpulan sendiri, dan kesimpulan mereka belum tentu sama dengan Anda.

If a director reads only your slide titles, do they still get the message? That’s the test. A topic title (“Q3 Logistics Cost”) makes the audience draw their own conclusion, which may not match yours.

Membaca direktur: jalur sentral atau periferalReading directors: central or peripheral route

Elaboration Likelihood Model (Petty & Cacioppo, 1986) membedakan dua jalur persuasi.

The Elaboration Likelihood Model (Petty & Cacioppo, 1986) distinguishes two routes to persuasion. Directors with time and a stake weigh argument quality (central route). Busy or less-involved directors judge by cues: confidence, clarity, reputation (peripheral route). A crisp, numbered opening serves both: a strong cue for the busy, and a way into the argument for those who want to dig.

Garis etika. The ethics line. Ethical persuasion makes the right decision easy to understand. Don’t hide risks, fake urgency, or quote numbers you can’t stand behind. Directors will meet you again, and being caught steering them once damages your credibility for good.
7Level audiens dan forumAudience level and forum Advanced

Jawaban dulu di semua level, tapi “jawabannya” berbedaAnswer first at every level, but the “answer” changes

Directors, heads of department, managers, and supervisors all need the answer in your first sentence. What differs is the altitude of the message. For a director, the answer is a decision and its business impact. For a supervisor, it’s the action: what, who, when.

Research backs this. Smith and Trope (2006) found that power leads people to process information more abstractly. Construal Level Theory (Trope & Liberman, 2010) explains how psychological distance sets how abstractly people think. Top leaders see the forest; the team on the ground sees the trees.

Classic STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) leaves the result for last, just like a chronological presentation. Flip it: the Result first in one sentence, then just enough S-T-A, then restate the result with a number. The panel knows where your story is heading, so they hear the details as proof.

Pertanyaan balik level direktur. Director-level questions to ask back. “What does success look like in this role at 12 months?” and “Which supply risk worries the board most right now?” Both show you think about outcomes and risk, not perks.
